New notebook not connecting?

I bought my sister a notebook computer to replace her ancient slow big tv contraption. She is hooked up thru her phone company Verizon . The old computer worked slolwly but connected now she says she cant connect with the new notebook. Do we need to call the phone company and go thru the motions with them? Im going to her house today to see if I can help but I am only an amateur. Thanks.
