What is the British maritime law regarding pirates? I am told hanging for piracy has never been repealed!?

Someone I knows son is a merchant seaman that regularly run the guantlet of Somalian Pirates. These seaman now get extra danger money so that says that the owners understand the problem but do not advukate violence in any way!
