Sherry is a very civilised drink. Nothing to do with ones age, but more to do with ones social structure. It was polite etiquette to offer ones guests a sherry when they arrived. Whatever they drank afterwards, sherry was the ice breaker. All genuine sherry come from Jerez in Andulucia and is not the rubbish that you put in a trifle. That would be sacrilege. All the spirits were available but hard liquor was frowned upon for ladies and the occasional gl of sherry, in a copita of course was acceptable.
